Sr. Director, Military & Veterans AffairsPosition SummaryThe Sr. Director, Military & Veterans Affairs is responsible for developing, directing, and maintaining military and veteran education efforts. The position is responsible for Military Affairs, Veteran Affairs, ROTC, and all military-related programs and policies. The position will work closely with university leadership, deans, and directors to implement the vision of the university and assist with building and improving offerings for military-affiliated students at the university. The Sr. Director, Military & Veterans Affairs reports to the VP of Academic Affairs and Provost.Job DutiesLeadership / Management

  • Lead and manage Military and Veteran Center (MVC), Military Programs, and ROTC programs.
  • Oversee DoD MOU and VA policy compliance and associated DoD, Military branch, and VA portals.
  • Develop and manage multiple projects and plans involving military and veteran students and programs.
  • Supervise and manage Army IgnitED, AIPortal, and Navy education portals.
  • Oversee and advise UIW's Student Veterans of America chapter.
  • Supervise the Military and Veteran Center PAVE (Peer Advisors for Veteran Education) program.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.Communications
    • Serve as primary university liaison for all military and veterans affairs supporting all military affiliated students.
    • Work closely with university leadership, deans, and director of marketing and recruitment to develop and implement successful plans and marketing efforts to reach the military and veterans communities.
    • Develop and maintain productive relationships with all internal and external constituencies.
    • Coordinate and develop new academic programs to increase military and veteran student enrollment.
    • Collaborate with academic and administrative deans, academic program directors, marketing and admissions directors, and other offices, which interact with military affiliated students.
    • Develop strong relationships within the learning community to include tenure-track, professional-track, and affiliate-faculty members to support military connected students.
    • Review, complete, and submit military connected student support surveys including the Military Times Best for Vets: Colleges survey.
    • Execute and plan military and veteran events including all campus military appreciation events, military appreciation sporting events, and military community events on campus.
    • Evaluate, assess, improve, and support military connected student, staff, and faculty (Undergraduate, Graduate, Doctoral, and Professional Schools).
    • Encourage and support all military HPSP (Health Professions Scholarship Program) students and encourage program promotion with military recruiters.
    • Identify military and veteran data quality issues and coordinate with Institutional Research to improve reports and implement system improvements to better identify military student population.
    • Manage and continually update Military and Veteran Services webpages.
    • Conduct high quality military connected student surveys; review feedback and implement changes based on survey results.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.Talent Development / Training
      • Provide and coordinate military and veteran educational training for all staff and faculty.
      • Collaborate and educate internal stakeholders on military and veteran issues primarily with Alumni Relations, Development, Business Office, Office of the Registrar, Admissions, Academic Advising, Career Services, Behavioral Health Services, Mission and Ministry, and Facilities.
      • Serve as liaison and provide educational support to Army ROTC and Air Force ROTC students and programs.
      • Manage UIW's participation in the DoD SkillBridge Program.Budget and Financial Management
        • Accurately and effectively manage program budgets including Military Affairs, Veterans Affairs, and Military Science (ROTC) budgets.
        • Manage and execute Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) College Credit for Heroes Grant and any other military related grants submitted by department that support military connected students.
        • Support any military connected students utilizing military Tuition Assistance (TA) and Veterans Affairs (VA) education benefits.
        • Ensure military benefits are processed correctly and in a timely manner.
        • Serve as a liaison with Business Office to ensure proper student invoicing and military portal invoicing.
        • Coordinate with Development Office on military connected student scholarships and military connected donation opportunities.
        • Supervise and ensure proper execution of UIW Endowed Veterans Scholarship fund.
        • Research and submit grants to provide additional services for military affiliated students.Military Liaison / Partner Relationship Development
          • Generate new military partnerships and contract educational opportunities, marketing development on/near installations to increase military and veteran enrollments.
          • Seek and manage participation in Request for Proposals (RFP's) and Memoranda of Understanding (MOU) and any other partnership opportunities with all military branches.
          • Seek partnership opportunities with other colleges and schools offering military programs including local JROTC units. This will involve travel primarily within the State of Texas, as well as some travel outside of the state.
          • Stay current on any and all military directives that will affect military connected students.
          • Coordinate military academic support services for military connected students.
          • Maintain current military contracts and partnerships.Strategic Planning
            • Organize, develop, and execute UIW's strategic priority of becoming a premier provider to military & veterans; serve as Chairperson of Military and Veteran Strategic Priority Committee.
            • Develop and execute continued growth in military connected student markets.
            • Represent and act as primary liaison with military, business, continuing education and other external military and veteran related partnerships.
            • Establish and maintain essential positive outreach contacts with the educational organizations and staff that are part of the various service organizations.
            • Establish and grow relationships with local, state, and national military and veteran organizations.
            • Work closely with marketing and recruitment to make sure that we are represented appropriately at military education fairs and conferences.QualificationsKnowledge Skills and Abilities
              • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
              • Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and priorities.
              • Ability to prioritize and plan work activities efficiently.
              • Ability to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner, as well as adapt to shifting priorities.
              • Proficiency with Microsoft Office to include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerBi, PowerPoint, etc.
              • Strong customer service skills to include the ability to effectively diffuse difficult/emotional customers while showing respect and sensitivity to cultural differences.
              • Strong written and verbal communication skills to present information clearly, concisely, and professionally to include accuracy in spelling and grammar.
              • Ability to complete tasks on time or notify appropriate personnel in a timely manner when alternate plans are appropriate.
              • Ability to travel extensively within and out of the state of Texas.
              • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures.
              • Employee shall adhere to all applicable rules and regulations of the University, the Conference and the NCAA.Required EducationMaster's Degree from an accredited institution.Required Work Experience
                • Ten (10) or more years of administrative management experience.
                • Five (5) years of supervisory experience in a relevant professional setting.
                • Three (3) years of experience working with military and veteran education benefits.Preferred Qualifications
                  • Terminal Degree.
                  • Prior experience working with or for the military.
                  • Four (4) or more years of experience working with military and veteran education benefits.Required Certifications, Licenses or RegistrationsMust have a valid driver license, driving record that is insurable by UIW insurance carrier, and be at least 21 years of age, as required to drive for UIW.Work HoursMonday - Friday from 8am to 5pm with extended hours based on departmental needs to include some weekend work.Physical Demands
